This trace element plays a key role in providing plants with nitrogen, so quite often its deficiency is confused with nitrogen deficiency - they have similar symptoms. With molybdenum starvation, plants develop slowly, their leaves instead of a rich green color become discolored and look pale. Molybdenum moves through the culture, so the first symptoms of its deficiency appear on old leaves. It lengthens, has an irregular shape, is covered with yellow spots and chlorosis along the edges.
An excess of molybdenum in plants is just as dangerous as its deficiency - it negatively affects cattle, provoking a lack of copper in their stomachs, which in turn leads to serious animal diseases.
Molybdenum is the only element whose availability increases with increasing pH. In soil, available molybdenum is in an anionic form, so it leaches on sandy, low organic matter, and well-drained soils.
